Qiviut
Qiviut is an extremely rare and luxurious animal fiber obtained from the soft undercoat of the musk ox, which inhabits Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The fiber is renowned for its exceptional warmth, softness, and light weight and is considered one of the finest and warmest natural fibers in the world. Qiviut has been used for centuries by Indigenous Arctic communities for garments designed to withstand extreme cold. Due to its rarity and performance, qiviut occupies a unique position within luxury and heritage textiles.

Production
Qiviut is collected during the musk ox’s natural molting season, when the animals shed their insulating undercoat. The fiber is gathered by hand from the ground or gently combed from the animal, ensuring minimal disturbance and high fiber quality. The raw material consists of fine qiviut fibers mixed with coarse guard hairs, which must be carefully separated through dehairing. After cleaning, the fine fibers are spun into yarn and used primarily in knitwear. The limited availability of qiviut and the labor-intensive collection process result in extremely small production volumes.
Use / Applications
Qiviut is used almost exclusively in high-end cold-weather garments and accessories where maximum warmth and comfort are required. Its rarity and cost restrict its use to small-scale, artisanal, or luxury applications.
Common uses and applications include:
- Knitwear such as hats, scarves, cowls, and sweaters
- Lightweight thermal accessories
- Heritage and artisanal textile products
Properties & Aesthetic Qualities
Qiviut fibers are exceptionally fine and soft, with a smooth, non-prickly hand feel. The fiber provides outstanding thermal insulation, retaining warmth even in extremely cold conditions. Qiviut has a natural matte appearance and is typically used in its undyed state, displaying subtle shades of gray and brown. The fiber is highly flexible and resistant to pilling, contributing to long-lasting garments despite its delicate feel.
Advantages & Limitations
Advantages
Qiviut offers unparalleled warmth relative to its weight, making it ideal for extreme cold environments. The fiber is exceptionally soft and comfortable against the skin and does not felt or shrink easily. Qiviut garments are durable when properly cared for and offer a rare combination of performance and luxury.
Limitations
Qiviut is extremely rare and expensive, with very limited global availability. Production is restricted by the natural molting cycle and the remote habitats of musk oxen. The fiber is not suitable for mass production and is primarily limited to small accessories and knitwear rather than large garments.
Sustainability, Care & Variations
Qiviut is a renewable fiber collected through non-invasive methods that align closely with animal welfare and environmental preservation. The fiber is biodegradable and harvested without harming the animals. From a care perspective, qiviut textiles should be washed gently by hand or dry cleaned to preserve fiber integrity. Qiviut is sometimes blended with wool or silk to improve yarn stability and reduce cost while maintaining its exceptional warmth and softness.
