Rayon
Rayon is a regenerated cellulose-based fiber made from natural plant materials, most commonly wood pulp. Although derived from renewable resources, rayon is classified as a semi-synthetic fiber due to the chemical processes required to transform cellulose into a spinnable form. Production
Rayon production begins with the extraction of cellulose from wood pulp, which is then chemically processed to create a viscous solution. The most common production method is the viscose process, although other variants exist. The manufacturing process requires careful chemical and water management, as the fiber’s environmental profile is closely linked to how responsibly these processes are controlled.

The sustainability of rayon depends heavily on raw material sourcing and manufacturing practices. When produced using responsibly sourced cellulose and closed-loop systems, environmental impact can be significantly reduced. From a care perspective, rayon should be washed gently and at low temperatures to prevent fiber damage. Rayon exists in several modified forms, such as modal and lyocell, which are engineered to improve strength, durability, and environmental performance while retaining the fiber’s characteristic softness and drape.
